Across
A disorder of severely stunted physical and mental growth, as a result of congenital deficiency of the thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone production is impaired. This limits growth and causes mental retardation. Symptoms include decreased activity, constipation, poor feeding patterns, and excessive sleeping.
Use of substances containing steroids to increase muscle mass. When misused, this can result in many issues. This abuse causes the user harm. Symptoms include extreme mood swings, poor decision making, aggression and irritability, and obsessive lying.
A rare disorder that is the result of increased levels of growth hormone, prior to the fusion of the growth plate that occurs at some point following puberty. This is most likely a result of abnormal tumor growths on the pituitary gland. Symptoms include large hands and feet, excessive sweating, insomnia, deafness, weakness, and coarse facial features.
Swelling in the neck due to an enlarged thyroid gland, of which is not functioning properly. Over 90% of cases around the world are a result of iodine deficiency. In developed countries, goiter is typically a result of an autoimmune disease. The symptoms include a swollen neck, a tight feeling in the throat, coughing, and difficulty breathing/swallowing.
An abnormally elevated blood sugar level. Diabetes is the most common result of this. Factors can contribute to those affected that have diabetes include appetite choices, physical activity, illness, and medications taken. If the pancreas is not releasing enough insulin, blood glucose levels will not be in a normal range. Causes other than diabetes can include Pancreatic Cancer, severe stresses on the body (heart attacks/trauma), and Cushing’s Syndrome. Symptoms include fatigue, increased urination, dry mouth, abdominal pain, nausea, and blurred vision.
A hormonal disorder caused by too much growth hormone in the body. The pituitary, a small gland in the brain, creates this growth hormone. The pituitary produces excessive amounts of this GH. Symptoms include enlargement of features, pronounced brow protrusion, carpal tunnel syndrome, slowing of speech, and a deep voice.
This is an excess of androgens in the female body. Androgens are male sex hormones, such as testosterone. This can lead to beard growth, and enlargement of the clitoris so it resembles a small penis. Symptoms include premature puberty, excessive body hair, cessation of menstruation, acne, and obesity.
A more severe disorder that occurs as a result of a lack of production of thyroid hormone. This leads to a loss of brain function, and can be life-threatening. It is a coma that one falls into as a result of such severe lack of thyroid production. Symptoms include mental impairment, weight gain, lethargy, headaches, cold intolerance, and fatigue.
A disorder caused by too much of the hormone aldosterone released into the blood flow, from the adrenal gland. This results in sodium reabsorption, and loss of hydrogen and potassium ions. This is caused by hyperactivity in one, or both adrenal glands. It can be primary: an issue caused by the adrenals themselves, or secondary: caused by an issue elsewhere in the body. Symptoms include high blood pressure, muscle spasms, constant fatigue, numbness, and temporary paralysis.
A disorder that makes the XY fetuses insensitive to androgens. When born, they externally appear as girls. This is a result of end-organ resistance to testosterone. Symptoms include little/no pubic hair, growth spurts, hypospadias, and small sexual organs.
The result of an abnormal immune system response that causes the thyroid gland to produce too much thyroid hormone. This is most common in women over the age of twenty. Symptoms include anxiety, weight loss, irritability, fatigue, rapid heartbeat, and enlargement of the thyroid gland.
This is also known as low blood sugar, where blood sugar decreases to below normal levels. It is often related to the treatment of diabetes. Symptoms include fatigue, pale skin, shakiness, anxiety, visual disturbances, hunger, and sweating.
Down
A condition in which the pituitary gland does not make enough growth hormone. This causes the child’s growth pattern to slow, normally resulting in a height below average. Symptoms include shortness, bone complaints, a large head with prominent forehead, and a normal size torso with short arms and legs.
A disorder that results from hypersecretion of the adrenal cortex. When a pituitary tumor secretes too much ACTH, the adrenal glands produce too much cortisol. Symptoms include obesity, a moon face, hyperglycemia, and muscle weakness.
A disorder where the body produces insufficient amounts of certain hormones produced by adrenal glands. The adrenal glands produce too little cortisol and not enough levels of aldosterone. Symptoms include weakness, postural hypotension, a bronze pigmentation of skin, and weight loss.
SAD A classification of depression that comes and goes in a seasonal pattern. It can be known as “Winter Depression” because symptoms are more clear during the Winter. Symptoms include sluggishness, feelings of hopelessness, having difficulty concentrating, and experiencing sleeping problems.
diabetes insipidus This is the hyposecretion of ADH, with the inability to conserve water appropriately. ADH is synthesized in the hypothalamus and transported to the posterior pituitary. Symptoms include major dehydration, dilute urine produced, and thirst.
A disorder where the parathyroid glands in one’s neck produce too much parathyroid hormone. Any events triggering increased production of the parathyroid glands can contribute to rickets. Symptoms include bone pains, weak and tired muscles, depression, frequent urination, and high blood pressure. Most symptoms are quite mild.
A deficiency of parathyroid secretion results in an abnormal increase in nerve/muscle excitability. This results in arm and leg spasms. Symptoms include abdominal pain, finger twitching, tingling sensations, muscle pain, grimacing, and numbness.
