A factor present in an environment that controls a process. In particular, it refers to the factor that limits growth, abundance, and distribution of a population of organisms in an ecosystem.
An organism that generally obtains food by feeding on other organisms or organic matter due to lack of the ability to manufacture own food; a heterotroph.

An organism that decomposes, or breaks down, organic material such as the remains of dead organisms.
Organisms that make their own food; they are also known as autotrophs. They get energy from chemicals or the sun, and with the help of water, convert that energy into useable energy in the form of sugar, or food.
