Hoz Bros. Market was a long-time fixutre at 107 Green Street, started in 1948 by brothers Rudolph (1909-1992) and Benigno (1914-2004) Hoz, natives of __ (country). In 1959 Rudolph sold his interest to his brother, who continued it with his wife Charlotte as Hoz Market for 20 years.
The Great Atlantic & __ Tea Company, better known as A&P, was an American chain of grocery stores that operated from 1859 to 2015. Herkimer had one at 206 N. Main Street and 323 E. Albany St. (where Bassett Health Center is today).
John Cassella (1910-1981) started out with a __ market in 1937 and then helped run his sister-in-law's store Fazio's in the 40's. By 1947 he opened up John's Super Market at 105 S. Main St. where the train depot was located. He retired in 1970 - today it is "Desperado Western Wear."
In 1947, Elizabeth Olsen of #19 Down sold her grocery business to Clarence Rivenburg (1910-1979) and his wife Sylvia Fellows (1911-1992) at 125 King St. They called it Rivenburg's Corner Store being located on the cor. of King and Eastern Ave. and operated it up until 1992. Along with your groceries, you could pick up news, confectionery and __ supplies for the kids.
John Pollak (1886-1973) and his wife Kristina Cadra (1891-1962) were from Czechoslovakia and built a combination store and house at 404 S. Washington St. in 1917, which he operated until his retirement in 1966. John was also a cabinet maker at __ Furniture.
Stephen (ca.1888-1946) and Stefania (1894-1971) Nowacki were Polish immigrants who operated a grocery and meat market at 349 S. Washington St. from 1921 until 1968. In 1950, Stefania sued Freeman Beverages in Utica when she discovered a __ in a soft drink the company bottled. Ugh!
Damian Merena (1872-1951) and his wife Eva Haszcyc (1880-1957) both were from Galicia, Poland. They came to Herkimer in 1911 and started a grocery at their home on 317 King Street until the late 1950s. Damian helped establish the St. Mary's __ in East Herkimer and served as an interpreter in courts.
Griffin's Grocery was opened in 1923 by Clinton Griffin (1938-59) at 202 N. Caroline St. It was taken over by his son James (1924-1992) who operated it until 1961. Interesting note about Clinton - he was a pitcher for the old "Herkimer Independent" semi-pro __ team and managed them from 1914-1926 when they were Mohawk Valley champions.
One of the __ groceries in Herkimer was started by Albert (1873-1949) and his wife Elizabeth (1877-1967) Lawrence on the corner of Bellinger Ave. and Bellinger St. They had 2 sons - Leo, a longtime NYS assemblyman and Albert, a prominent attorney.
One of the last neighborhood groceries that still exists (#11 Down) is on the site of what was first a confectionery store until 1944, operated by the Tracy family who left the business to pursue religious work with the Jehovah's __. They were missionaries in British Guiana and Brazil.
The Chirico Brothers are known for their restaurant and __, but their first venture when they came to Herkimer was a grocery at 125 W. Smith Street around 1916.
Joseph Fazio (1896-1938) was a prominent grocery at 229 S. Main St., who operated "Fazio's Market" with his wife Catherine Donato (1901-1975) until his death. It continued to operate under Catherine's brother-in-law John Cassella and later Victor Carelli (1917-2011) and Lucian Leone, her son-in-law up to the early 1950s. It was razed when St. __ Church was built in 1964.
The Herkimer Chief at 236 N. Main Street was not only the longest running grocery store in Herkimer, but was the first to offer __ service. One of its owners Salvatore Servello, who worked in the store, bought it from the Abeson's in 1956 and operated it with his wife Dolores Chard (1933-1987) until 1987. It was closed in 1992 and is now a laundromat.

Young men from Herkimer High School would __ out the ground floor windows to go across the street to Martin's Variety Store at 446 N. Bellinger St. to get a snack. This store was opened in 1948 by Martin Tarnawa (1911-2003).
The introduction of the larger chain store __ Food City (later Discount City) in 1968 on Route 28 was the beginning of the replacement of the family-owned neighborhood groceries. This is where I spent my Friday evenings as a young girl shopping with my parents.
Joseph F. Aiello (1897-1973) came from Italy in 1921 and began a family grocery business in 1948, Aiello's Super Food Market on Mohawk Street, that lasted up to the 1990's. You could look in your local paper and get a __ for further discounts at their store.
Caliguire's grocery was on the south side at the corner of S. Main and W. Smith Streets (101 W. Smith) near what was then the __ school. Joseph (1889-1961) and Rose (1894-1953) Caliguire were Italian immigrants who started up their own shop and raised a family of eight children.
Emory Ausman (1871-1935) traded his __ in for a grocery business in 1919 when the Eighteenth Amendment was passed. He partnered with his clerk Martin Manion (1863-1942). It was located at 425 N. Washington St., just a short walk from former Historical Society volunteer Tod Waterbury's (1912-2014) home on Willow Ave. who worked there after school and through the Depression.
There were plenty of places to stock up on your groceries in Herkimer in 1938. There were twenty-__ in all throughout the village.
A popular corner grocery store at 232 N. Washington was known as Shaughnessy's Grocery from the 1940s up to the 70s. By 1978 it was known as the name we know it today - __'s Corners.
Historical Society volunteer Ted Adams worked at Griffin's Store of #17 Across as a young boy and remembers local men who came back from World War II would come and sit and share __ of their experiences.
The Cornelius Snell home at 245 N. main Street was razed in 1956 for the Acme Supermarket, opened in 1959. We know the building today as the local __, purchased in 1974 and moved in the next year.
S. Washington Street had a number of groceries, including one at 339 S. Washington started in 1910 by newly married Polish couple John (1883-1953) and Cecelia (1888-1966) Siankiewicz and ran until the late 1950s. Today it is used as a __ located across from the Arc Herkimer building.
Elizabeth Sefcik Osley (1878-1959) was a widow with a young daughter when she moved to Herkimer in 1922 and started up her own grocery at 125 King Street and ran it until 1940. She was one of the stores that sold "Lifebuoy Health __ - A Bath A Day Keeps B.O. Away."
